5 Underrated Sci-Fi Movies That Will Mess With Your Head
You do not need a big budget to bend a mind. These five science-fiction films cost very little, rely on a single strong idea and trust you to keep up. All of them have been seen by far fewer people than they deserve.
1. Coherence (2013)
A group of friends at a dinner party notices strange things happening when a comet passes overhead. James Ward Byrkit's film was shot mostly in one house with largely improvised dialogue, and it is a masterclass in making a small space feel huge.
Why it's underrated: it has almost no marketing and no recognisable stars. It spreads purely because people tell their friends to watch it with no spoilers.
Best for: a group of three or more, followed by a long debate.
2. Moon (2009)
Duncan Jones's debut stars Sam Rockwell as an astronaut nearing the end of a lonely three-year contract on a lunar base. Something is wrong, and the less you know going in, the better. Kevin Spacey voices the base's computer.
Why it's underrated: it is a quiet, emotional film in a genre that usually values spectacle, and Rockwell's performance carries almost the whole film by himself.
Best for: a late night when you want something thoughtful.
3. Predestination (2014)
The Spierig Brothers adapted Robert Heinlein's short story "All You Zombies" into a time-travel film starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. A temporal agent hunts a bomber across decades, and the plot gets more tangled with every scene.
Why it's underrated: it was a small release that few people saw in cinemas, and the performances, especially Snook's, deserve far more attention than they received.
Best for: people who love time-travel puzzles.
4. Primer (2004)
Shane Carruth wrote, directed, scored and starred in this film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. It is famously made for a tiny sum, and it is also famously difficult, so be ready to pause and rewind.
Why it's underrated: most time-travel films explain themselves, and this one does not. That makes it harder to love at first sight and more rewarding the second time.
Best for: the viewer who likes a challenge and does not mind a flowchart.
5. Timecrimes (2007)
Nacho Vigalondo's Spanish thriller follows an ordinary man who accidentally travels back in time by about an hour and then makes things worse with every attempt to fix them. It is compact and wickedly neat.
Why it's underrated: it is a foreign-language film that is often overlooked in time-travel conversations, even though its structure is one of the cleanest of the genre.
Best for: a short, sharp movie night.
A tip for watching these
